MOBILE MEDIA EDUCATION PROGRAM

From 2002 to 2014, PICA Foundation has extended its Media Literacy Education services to students, Parents and Teachers in far-flung Dioceses/Parishes as part of our apostolate of evangelization through the social communications media – aware that our children and adolescents today spend anywhere from one third to one half of their waking hours with some forms of communications MEDIA. As educators we are particularly concerned – not only about the increasingly graphic, ‘realistic’ and commercial content featured in these technologies – but also of how our children and adolescents process and make sense of what they read, listen to, browse on the web and watch on television.

To answer this urgent need for Media Awareness Literacy Education, PICA then offered a two-hour session (per grade/year level) on critical awareness, analysis, evaluation and reflection for students. The service we have been rendering to the different schools [both private and public] was for FREE, although, we required each student to pay fifty pesos (P50.00) for the worksheets and booklet that we used for the sessions.

Program Description

PROGRAM: “Media Awareness” Session
AUDIENCE: Elementary & High School Students

RATIONALE

For the school year 2008-2009, PICA wants to continue giving exclusive attention to developing the media literacy skills of children and parents. This is in conjunction with the theme underlined by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI in his message on World Communications Day ”Children and the Media: A Challenge for Education”.

OBJECTIVES
1.To sharpen the students’ awareness of the place which MEDIA occupy in their  lives.
2.To help deepen the students’ perception and understanding of the power and impact of media languages.
3.To guide the students in the evaluation of the various media outputs especially the TV programs and movies.

Expected Counterpart:
1.Board and lodging for two facilitators (if location is outside of Metro Manila.
2.Arrangement of venue/media equipment by the organizers, etc..

Program: “Media Awareness”
Audience: Parents/Guardians
Duration: Three hours
Program Description: A three-hour session with parents/Guardians (during card-giving days) – which will deepen their perception and understanding of media’s impact, thus, empower them to educate their children towards critical autonomy.

Objectives:
1.To provide parents/guardians with the basic understanding of how the media can effect behavioral changes in children.

2.To offer practical guidelines for critical awareness and evaluation of media images in the light of Christian values.

Expected Outcome: Given the opportunity to gain more knowledge and skills on how to become more critical, creative and responsible media consumers, they could very well serve as our partners in the formation and media education of today’s children.

PART 1: WHO IS A MEDIA CLUB MEMBER?
A. One who appreciates:

the different forms of Media
the different languages used by the Media to communicate meaningful messages.

B. One who is AWARE of:

the three ‘P’s of Media
the positive contributions of Media to people
the negative impact of Media on people
the psychological effects of Media especially on children

C. One who is ‘media literate’, or, has the ability to:

analyze and evaluate media messages
‘make sense’ of what one sees and hears
make responsible choices for oneself based on Christian principles

D. One who is willing to promote media awareness and literacy through creative actvities.

E. A MEDIA CLUB member is an “effective communicator:
