Last June 17, 2013, a big group of FSP missioners descended upon the town of Amadeo, Cavite. An interesting mix: there were 18 professed Sisters, 7 young sisters in formation, and 3 members of the Association of Pauline Cooperators. With the collaboration of zealous parish priest, Fr. Oliver Genuino, we carried out a whirlwind Bible mission as part of the “Bibliya sa Bawat Pamilya” anniversary project of the Daughters of St. Paul.
The activity opened with a Holy Mass presided by Fr. Ollie, who introduced us to around 80 people who trooped to the parish church to take part in the Bible mission. Sr. Ding Paloma, emcee, whipped up the enthusiasm of the people by her spirited, motivating talk about the importance of the Bible and by teaching the people the action song, “I live now not I but Christ lives in me.” Sr. Maricor and Sr. Carmel Galula made a general presentation of the Bible. Sr. Mennen followed with instructions on Lectio Divina and a dry run of the same.
Then the Bible was enthroned and the people paid homage by going in procession to kiss it. Fr. Ollie blessed the individual Bibles which have been distributed to the people who gave a voluntary contribution according to their means.
Accompanied by the parish workers, we next fanned out into the barangays where small groups awaited us. As in the parish church, we motivated them on the importance of reading and living the Bible, especially on this Year of Faith. There was a general presentation of the Bible, the Lectio Divina and the enthronement of the Bible. The people would have liked to share more on the Word of God but there was little time, so we had to limit it.
It was a brief encounter with the people. Some have asked why they were not reached. More hearts are waiting for the Word of God, like hungry birds. Is anybody listening?
